We love Italian food in this house, so typically once every couple of weeks we have pasta. To me, the best part about Italian food is the sauce. If you want to have a great meal, you have to nail the sauce. Luckily my family has made this recipe for marinara sauce for YEARS. It has become an absolute staple in our meal rotation!

We even prefer it to any marinara sauce we’ve had in a restaurant!

To make it EVEN better, it’s easy and cost-effective as well! This recipe will make a HUGE batch of marinara sauce that you can split into 4-6 containers of sauce to freeze for later. No more buying jarred sauce, you can make homemade, delicious sauce at home and take your Italian nights to the next level!

Ingredients for the BEST Marinara Sauce!

  1. 1/2 cup of Olive Oil
  2. 1 large Onion, thinly sliced
  3. 6 cloves of Garlic, minced
  4. 2 28 oz. cans of Tomato Sauce
  5. 1 28 oz. can of Tomato Puree
  6. 1 28 oz. can of Crushed Tomatoes
  7. 3 tbsp. Basil
  8. 2 tbsp. Oregano
  9. 1 tbsp. Garlic Powder
  10. 1 tbsp. Salt (to taste)
  11. 1 tsp. Pepper
  12. 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese

How to Make the BEST Marinara Sauce

  1. Thinly slice your onion and mince the garlic cloves. I love using this garlic press to make it easier!

  2. Heat olive oil in a large pot (at least 5 quart) over medium-high heat.

  3. Add onions and cook until translucent, about 5-10 minutes.

  4. Turn heat to low and add garlic. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  5. Add all 4 cans of sauce and tomatoes.

  6. Instead of just throwing out the cans, rinse them out with a small amount of water each and add to the pot. Overall you need to add almost a whole can of water, so this is a great way to get the extra tomatoes out of the can as well.

  7. Add basil, oregano, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and parmesan cheese. Stir well.

  8. Add more/less water depending on how thick/thin you want the sauce to be.

  9. Cover and bring to a boil, then reduce to low. Cook for 1 hour, stirring every 5-10 minutes to make sure it doesn’t stick.

And that’s it! Feel free to serve with homemade meatballs, or add ground beef to make it into a meat sauce. Personally we love it just as it is, but adding protein is always a great option as well!

This makes a HUGE batch of sauce. We usually make this and eat it a couple of times during the week and freeze the rest. It usually makes 4-6 containers of sauce total, depending on the size of your containers. Our containers are the perfect size for 6 adult-sized servings of sauce.
